I wanted to make you all aware of a new laptop that will be first to market at Wal-Mart this Sunday.  PC Magazine is talking about the Dell Inspiron 13.  This Dell is a great laptop for the student on the go.  Weighing less than 5 pounds and with a screen size of 13.3' with integrated webcam; this makes a perfect Back to School gift.  Other specs include an Intel T2390 processor, 2GB of RAM and 160GB Hard Drive.  We will have this product first in the market so check out the circular this Sunday and head to your local Wal-Mart to pick up this great new laptop.  Did I mention that it is $698?   Here is 1 more review in mobilemag.

Category: Sustainability

Last week was a fun one for us in the sustainability area.  A few times a year, we hold a meeting focused on sustainability with all of Walmart’s leadership, a huge group of other Walmart folks, and usually, a big group of suppliers to Walmart, NGO’s, and other people interested in sustainability.  They are always fun, but this one was particularly good.

The meeting started with each of the very top leadership to Walmart sharing their vision for how sustainability will continue to be embedded into the way we do business and the way we source our products.  The senior leadership made very clear points like, “Sustainability isn’t separate from your job, it is your job,” and “Sustainability is a large part of the Walmart brand, Save Money Live Better works with sustainability.”

The meeting ended with a discussion between Cameron Diaz and Walmart CEO Lee Scott.  I have to admit I was surprised by how great Cameron was.  She was funny, endearing, and inspiring.  She told us how she is currently taking off time from Hollywood to work on her dream…to get as many of the thing she uses in life as sustainable as possible.  Now, this is exciting for me, because this is what I get to spend a fair amount of my day doing. But, this got me thinking why should Cameron Diaz be the only person who gets to tell Walmart the products she wants to see improved?  So, what product at Walmart do you want to see improved to be more sustainable?

I have heard some good suggestions on this blog, and I have learned about some items I didn’t even know.  I'd love to hear more.
For example, Laura commented about a cleaning product in CA, Holy Cow is the brand, and it sounds great, but its not even one I knew about.
Also, Anna and Michelle both commented on the lines on the detergent bottles.  They are hard to see, and that could create waste.  This is now on my “questions for suppliers” list, and I’ll find out an answer for you.
Laura mentioned how she was frustrated by the fact that she couldn’t find the organic apparel separate from the other…this is something we are going to work on.
Finally Jonathan…your thoughts are always good.  I applaud Tesco for pushing the conversation about carbon labeling, but this one has to be done right.  You will see more from Walmart on this topic.  I can’t think of anything that could impact sustainability more than if every customer could easily know what products are more sustainable.

Home again, well at least for the weekend. Really wanted to cover a few remaining topics before heading out on the road next week.

Rock Band 2 – WOW, upgraded drums only start the list. They look like the old ones, but are better built, quieter and the kick pedal is reinforced. Full capability exists for us to use all of our previous Rock Band songs AND downloadable content (DLC)! That is still just the tip of the iceburg.

Check out these high end drums. These are made for Rock Band and sell separately. Would you pay $300 for these drums? Pretty cool item.

Back to DLC, by the end of the year, Rock Band will have over 500 songs in the hopper. Rock Band 2 comes with 84 songs. With all of that content, they upgraded their interface so we can quickly select tunes. Set lists also become easier and longer if we choose. All masters, no covers! Harmonix is very serious about music. Looks like they are covering a WIDE spectrum of titles as well. Here is John from Harmonix giving us the low down.

A new Guns ‘n’ Roses song will debut on Rock Band as well. The new guitars and drums are wireless. Also, like the drums, the new guitar not only looks better, it is better. It autocalibrates via a microphone and a lens. Harmonix appears to be listening to users and making real changes to make the experience better for everyone.

Not enough Rock Band? Well, here is another acronym for you, UGC. That stands for User Generated Content. With Rock Band 2, folks can customize to an even greater degree. Take your band to the next level and make posters, shirts and even miniature figurines of them! Anyone have a great band name? Harmonix will also have DAILY challenges for us to enjoy. Want to know how good you and your mates are? Now you can find out.

Sony showed us their MMO game: The Agency. No word on if it will require a monthly fee or be priced from an in game store. Basically, two teams exist. One is suave, like James Bond while the other is more like Rambo. Each team tries to complete the missions. There are unique character classes and modes. Looks like a fun game for both the PS3 and a peecee. The formats will not allow for cross platform play though.

Resistance 2 is a great follow-up to a super launch title. Insomniac really does a great job. This is their 3rd PS3 title (Resistance 1 and Ratchet and Clank were previous titles). We got to play online and had a great time. Fans are in for a thrill ride. Hint to my wife, this would make a great Festivus present!

Quick Hits:

Lego Batman, looking good. We can play as good guys or baddies here. Batman detects and disarms traps whilst the baddies get to set them to foil the caped crusader.

Madden 09, an evolution, not a revolution. It will be a big seller this year with Brett Favre on the cover and it being the 20th anniversary edition.

Here is a screen shot of Wii Music. Nintendo is big on it. Some hardcore gamers may not be as excited.

Sega’s Samba De Amigo was a lot of fun to play at their booth as well. This one looks like a hit for all of the previous fans. On the Wii, it will be a strong title.

Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, SOCOM Confrontation also all looked like more solid hits for the PS3 console. Little Big will also feature some UGC in the way of maps that we can share over the PSN.

Also, met some folks from Destructoid (Hey Dale, Nick and Colette), Kotaku (Hey Mike) and Joystiq (Hey Alexander). (Dale asked that I mention Destructiod 1st, but you all do a great job keeping us informed with the happenings of our industry). If you are not going to ALL THREE of these sites, you are really missing out on the latest scoops. These full time journalists cover our industry like no one. They are real stars in our business and you should see what is happening at their sites. It is daily, required reading for me.

Hope the weekend finds you all safe and happy. Enjoy some time with those around you that really matter.

One of the coolest parts of my job is working with suppliers to bring you all great deals.  Today, I am announcing a deal that is the best we have delivered so far this year.  The time is perfect as the economy is what it is, and people are getting prepared for going back to school.

Sunday at 8 am, we will begin selling a Toshiba laptop that has 2GB of RAM, 120GB Hard Drive, Reads and Writes cd’s and dvd’s, has a 15.4” screen, has wireless capability and the Windows Vista Premium Operating System.  All of this for $398.  That's right; $398!!  This is a tremendous value for anyone looking for a laptop.  Supplies are limited (we did buy a lot, but think at this price it will be quite popular).  This item will also be on the front cover of our circular this Sunday.

As I've said before, you can expect we will keep delivering on great prices in electronics.  You bet we want to be competitive -- and especially this year show students (and moms) we know they care about both the price and the product!

Well, where do we being?

Sony: Their press event covered some new services for the PS3. Starting now, users will be able to purchase and rent standard def and high def movies via the PSN network. Sounds a lot like one of my favorite devices, Apple TV, will be a feature on my beloved PS3. It seemed like it should have been there all along, but it is becoming a reality. There is more, a hint of God of War 3 was shown, strap in, this will be a great one. They also showed a great new game, title unknown, with 256 player action. This is unreal. It sure felt a lot like a new version of SOCOM. That was not stated, just a feeling. September should bring an 80G PS3 unit as well. Whew, lots of stuff coming from Sony. They are on it!

Nintendo: Here too, lots of great news. Here is a picture of an add on to the Wii Mote that allows for even MORE motion to be added.

Very cool. It is called Motion Plus. Some new titles were shown, Animal Crossing looks like fun, Wii Sports Resort (try the jet ski) and Wii Music were shown. The drums will be my favorite. I know I will never be the back-up for Rush, but I can dream. It allows us to play instruments with no peripherals other than our standard Wii controllers. Wii speak will allow us to chat on new titles on line. As I understand it, this will not work on older titles, but on new ones. Pretty cool though! It is a room wide microphone, so think of it as a boardroom conference call in the house while gaming. Nintendo is also on it!

Games:

Bionic Commando from Capcom is updated. Remember the old 2D scroller? Well forget what you think you know. He is back and in high def. The vertical nature of this one was impressive. Check out the Bionic Arm! I think I could do some damage with it, but judgement prevailed.

Rock Revolution from Konami was shown. Yes, think of Rock Band and Guitar hero, but check out the drums.

They are going a different direction with this. The drums are really solid and in a different configuration. The stick holder is also unique as they slide into the kit. This feels like a very durable kit that Konami worked hard on. Ok, here is me with it.

Fallout 3, the post apocalyptic shooter also looks like fun. The trailer they showed had a real 1950's "Leave it to Beaver" feel. This is a highly anticipated game and based on what we have seen so far, it appears well worth it.  Here I am with the big guy himself.

Rayman from Ubisoft. Here is where we heard the term "precision butt action". Now I have been playing games for a long time, so this was new to me. Let me explain. You all heard of Rayman and the fun mini games from Ubi's  Paris studio. Well, here is Antoine Henry from Ubisoft and Calyber from the Frag Dolls.

Calyber has a cool job. Let the envy begin. She is a professional gamer. How cool is that? She and the Frag Doll team make their living playing videogames. Antoine is one of the programmers for the new Rayman. In one of Rayman's mini games, you ride cows on the snow. If you have a Wii Fit Board, break it out. You "steer" (bad pun) the cow while sitting. Calyber called it, "precision butt action" and who am I to argue? We all played the dance mini game, and this will be a good game at parties.

Midway showed us This is Vegas.

It is an open world sandbox version of Vegas. Some of the familiar landmarks are renamed, but you can figure it out. There are three mechanics in the game, gambling, partying and fighting. In gambling, you can try to cheat to gain an advantage. It was fun, but even with the cheat enabled, wins were not a guarantee. Fighting was pretty straight forward button mashing. The partying was fun as it incorporated a rhythm concept to get your groove on. It was fun. Hopefully, what happened in Vegas, STAYS in Vegas. (OK, lame slug line).

No game play of Blitz, the league 2, but a very cool trailer. This anti-NFL football, M-rated title is coming along well.

More Ubi - Heard of Shaun White? If not, you will. The new snowboarding game looked very realistic on the 360. On the Wii, you will be able to break out the Wii Fit board as well. Shaun was there and sure seemed like a genuinely nice guy. He is a great athlete and a super talented snow board professional. With the marketing campaign Ubisoft has planned, everyone will know who Shaun is.

Even more Ubi. They also showed End War, a new Tom Clancy RTS. What makes this different was voice control. Yes, it recognized my voice. I said "Unit 1 attack hostile 2" and on the screen my helicopter team focused on the enemy tanks and completed the mission. It felt like being a general commanding a vast army. This is a new dimension that should be incredibly cool. Even with my Pittsburgh accent, the troops were moving with precision.

All in all, we met a lot of programmers and marketing folks. You really have to appreciate the programmers. These folks work really hard to bring our hobby to life and with a few exceptions, most are not known to us by name. These are the unsung heroes and heroines of our industry. When we can see what they bring to life, we are in awe. Unlike movie directors and producers, the limelight is not on them in our industry as it is in others. Hats off to you all, keep bringing us great stuff. We appreciate you. Really, none of us would be working in this industry were it not for the combined efforts of you and your talented teams.

Finally,  we closed the evening with Jeff Rubenstein from the Playstation blog. These folks were celebrating their one year anniversary at King Taco here in LA. As you can see, gamers brought their PSP units and competition heated up with some Hot Shots golf.

There were also drawings. One person won a 40G Steel Grey PS3, very nice.

Hey, is that Jeremy Kizzar an Associate from Sam's Club 4824 in Valencia, CA 2nd from the left and Jeff Rubenstein on the far right? You bet. LA is the place where the stars come out! Great job and the carne asada tacos were amazing! A good time was had by all and it was great to speak with the gamers. Some were already Members and hopefully, some more will be as well. Many did not know that we offer prices below traditional retail at Sam's Club. I may have sold a few potential membership as well.

Time for some shut eye!
