I've read various reports over the last few months about Wal-Mart venturing into the services and installation business.  I thought this blog would be a good place to address those rumors and let you know some facts.

I can confirm that we’ll be testing an entertainment solutions service.  These Solutions Stations are managed with one of our strategic partners – Dell – and are aimed to help our customers build out their digital lifestyle using various products we offer.  From HDTV and home theatre installation, to computer repair and wireless help, we are excited to learn how customers will respond.

We may open about a dozen of these just in the Dallas market, as a pilot.  The pilot allows us to understand our customer’s needs in the area of solutions within a market and better understand the business model.

In a company statement we describe Solution Stations as providing “our Dallas-area customers with added services, repair, and consultation so that they can reach the best solution and value for their home entertainment technology needs.”  We think having Dell work with us is also a true win as we are able to take a brand that customer trust to help us continue to deliver on our commitment to save people money so they can live better.

So there you have it.  I hope that clears up any rumors that may be out there.  We are excited about the pilot and look forward to analyzing the results.  If you’re in the Dallas area and get into a Wal-Mart store where this is piloting, let me know your thoughts.

Here is a photo taken last night at a Solution Station in McKinney, Texas.

This is a great idea.  As your computer sales seem to be increasing this should help eliminate a lot of the fear that people might have.  They may be more likely to purchase a laptop because it is the right price and they know there will be someone available at your store to help them support it.

Hello,

I, too, think this is a great idea for Wal-Mart. I typically by my electronics from Best Buy even though the price is higher because I know I can get assistance from The Geek Squad through Best Buy.

Whenever I have trouble with my laptop, I simply drop it off with the Geek Squad (thanks to the 2 year contract I purchased) and pick it up when it's fixed.

Are you thinking of allowing customers to purchase yearly contracts with this service, or will it be a case-by-case basis?
