Let's talk about the big elephant in the corner.

Dell at retail

Pigs started flying.  Hell froze over.  Republicans and Democrats started getting along.  Ok, that last one was a little over the top.

It started with us, and then came Staples, and now Best Buy.  We have enjoyed reading all the articles, blogs, posts, etc that have been written by all the pundits (definition #1).  Everyone has an opinion.  But we already knew that.

So what do we think?  The customer has been very responsive, and voting with their dollar. Some customers that did not even consider buying a pc from Wal-Mart have changed their minds. People like brands, and people still like Dell.  Dell has brought us credibility in the pc category in the consumer's eyes.  Really? (you ask)  Yes, brands do that for us.  Other partners of ours -- HP, Toshiba, for example -- have also improved our credibility and image in this category.

So what now?  Is the pc landscape really changing by Dell entering retail?  Is it really even a big deal?  Revolution vs. Evolution?  Chocolate and/or peanut butter?  Or just another day in this ho-hum technological world?

It seems to me that Dell hasn't really jumped head first into the retail enviroment.  I think years and years of mail order operations is showing right now.  That said, I bet they're quick learners.

Dell understands that the ownership experience begins even before the product is out of the box -- with the purchase. So whether it's online, on the phone or in person at a store, our priority is helping customers find the product they want through the shopping experience they prefer. Clearly, the partnership of Wal-Mart and Dell makes sense to a lot of PC buyers.
