A few days ago, the progress report on sustainability was released. This was a difficult report to write. Wal-Mart’s humble unassuming cultural roots and past bruises from the media taking information the wrong way made the process slow and difficult. But, in the end, I can say this without hesitation, it is honest, and the information is right. It is a report on what has been done.
More important than anything else, anyone who questions the commitment of this company to make broad changes affecting the environment and customers’ and associates’ opportunities to “live better,” need only read the report to understand that we are trying. Wal-Mart is not as far along the path as we’d like it to be, but every day it is getting better, and it is 100% committed to the principles of sustainability for today and our common future. I hope that is what people get from the report.
