I am not the first one to ask this question, I know.  But is it true?  I may be in denial, as I am not ready to give up on my desktop -- my companion, my confidant.  The big monitor, the ergonomic laser mouse, the keyboard that literally types by itself via finger osmosis!

But, this mobility thing has caught my attention.  My wife mocks me as she parades around the house with her laptop.  Lip-syncing "Freedom" by Jimi Hendrix while on iTunes.  Checking her email from the couch.  Browsing the internet while lounging on top of her bed.  Organizing photos for her next scrapbooking event from the convenience of the kitchen table.

Yes, I am catching on that there may be something to this laptop thing -- but, wait -- I should remind her that we (my desktop and me, of course) still control the cable modem and wireless router.  Hah!  There, I win.  I can say that with authority and pride!  (because she fell asleep on the couch and can't hear me all the way over here)

While the mobility is nice, there's something to be said about having a 37" LCD TV screen as your computer monitor.  Until they design a laptop with a huge inflatable screen, I'll stick with what I've got.

Yes, mobility is nice, but until they can design a portable laptop (emphasis on weight) that doesn't sacrifice performance, desktops will still have their day.

I'm like you "this mobility thing might be kind of nice"  BUT I noticed that the things that you were describing that your wife was doing were things that would be considered pleasure in my world.  I am a bonified work-aholic and I have a really hard time quitting one job when I go to the next.  I own a florist and the animal shelter for two counties in Kentucky.  In addition to that, I also work 20 to 25 hours a week at a local job corps center.  I could take my "work" with me everywhere I go!!!!

Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop with 2 x 250GB HDDs and 1920 x 1200 px display:

+ a 24" monitor
+ keyboard
+ mouse
+ speakers

= freedom AND convenience.

During the day at home it performs as well as my soon to be auctioned 30kg desktop. Away from my desk in the evenings or when leaving home I yank the plugs and it's a grunty portable.

I love it. :o)

Apart from the stupid omission by Dell of a DVI outlet.
